Eyes to the Wind

My love for the sea, for being out there in nature and exploring our beautiful planet together with my family has sparked the idea of starting this journal.

On the outside it is a travel blog about our adventures as a family and the things we are passionate about, like setting sail towards new islands, strolling through forests, roadtripping, campfires, swimming in rivers and sleeping in treehouses.

But on the inside it is about a dream. The dream of living aboard a sailboat and traveling the world, the dream about inspiring others to fall in love with the great outdoors and celebrate our connection with nature and collectively change the world.

I know, I know it’s a long shot. But I’m here to throw my tiny stone into the water.

I feel like now it is more important than ever to help together and protect our beautiful planet.

I hope you find inspiration here to get out there on your own adventures, pursuing your own dreams. To see the beauty of the world and feel our connection to the Earth and all living creatures out there.

Because we protect what we love.

The Inner Compass

The Sea, the ultimate of my visions and dreams — living aboard a sailboat and traveling around the world. This is the horizon I will always keep my eyes on.

And I noticed something very inspiring the other day. A couple of years back, during a long, dark Swedish winter, when this dream felt so far out of reach, I printed out a couple of pictures, most of them about sailing, boat life, and outdoor adventures, being free, living in the moment, reflecting how I envisioned our life to be. My daughter and I pinned them above my desk, and all three of us looked at them many, many times, dreaming about setting sail towards the horizon.

Just recently, I spoke with a dear friend about it and wanted to send her a picture of it, I had to go way back in my photo archive, looking through the years. And then it struck me, how many of those dreams and visions already have become our reality. Maybe not in the exact way that I have pictured it once, but even better — in our own way.

Turning Dreams into Reality

We did learn how to sail. We bought a boat. And eventually, took a family sabbatical to sail the Baltic Sea and explore the countless islands between Sweden and Finland together with our daughter. Over the years we lived in Stockholm, we spent many more weeks and weekends out there in the archipelago, exploring the ever-changing backyard of our beloved floating home. We roamed through Scandinavia on land as well in our equally beloved camper van, that’s now waiting patiently for us in a barn in my hometown in Germany. While I’m writing this, I notice how many stories there are to tell already.

Isn’t it amazing, if we set our inner compass towards something that’s truly important to us, we consciously and subconsciously move towards it. Sometimes the steps are bigger, sometimes smaller. It’s all about the journey. My older sister once wrote this Buddhist Zen Wisdom on one of my birthday cards after I graduated from University:

„Life is full of detours. The art lies in admiring the scenery along the way.“

And that’s exactly what we’re doing.
